We also recognize National Suicide Prevention Month, National Anti-Bullying Prevention Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Our public policy resources include details about Disability Voting Rights Week, which is taking place from September 12th-16th. We encourage you to learn more and take action to make an impact. The Autism Society of America and Nickelodeon co-created a free, downloadable, Back-to-School resource pack to help support students on the Autism spectrum and their teachers. In this collaborative effort, our goal is to help empower Autistic students who are navigating their educational journeys and provide agency and engagement exclusively through positive reinforcement.

National Suicide Prevention Month

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline:  (Nationwide) Call or TEXT 988
Maine Suicide Prevention Resources

An additional access point to Maine’s crisis system, the 988 Lifeline serves as an alternative to dialing 911 for people who are experiencing emotional distress, thoughts of suicide, or a mental health crisis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Did you know: Research finds that Autistic individuals have a 3 times higher suicide rate than the general population. Autistic people with co-existing psychiatric conditions were found to be at an even significantly higher risk.

 

 

Crisis Supports for the Autism Community 

Lisa Morgan is a certified Autism specialist and advocate of the Autism community with regards to crisis supports, suicide prevention, and postvention. Founder and co-chair of the Autism and Suicide committee of the American Association of Suicidology and author of
‘Crisis Supports for the Autism Community' – a toolkit.   Lisa Morgan sits on the Autism Society of Maine Board of Directors.
